About the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown dependency, located in the Irish Sea at the geographical centre of the British Isles between Ireland and UK. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann. The Crown is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The Island is not part of the United Kingdom, but foreign relations, defence, and ultimate good-governance of the Isle of Man are the responsibility of the government of the United Kingdom.

Tynwald, the Island's parliament, was nominally founded in AD 979 by Vikings. It is the oldest continuous parliament in the world.  The Isle of Man is approximately 32 miles (51 km) long and between 8 miles (13 km) and 15 miles (24 km) wide, the island has an area of around 221 square miles (570 km2) with the population above 80,000.  The currency is British pounds.  Languages: English and Manx, Capital: Douglas, Symbol: Three Legs, which represents stability.

The Isle of Man is not a part of the European Union.
The booming economy of the Isle of Man is largely due to the success of the financial services industry - the largest sector on the Island.  The main activities of the sector include deposit-taking, asset protection and management, packaged investments such as unit trusts, life assurance, registration and management of the companies, yachts, and aircrafts.  Markets for these services are world-wide and the Isle of Man has built an exceptional reputation as a centre of excellence for expatriate banking.

Regulation of the finance sector in the Isle of Man is carried out by the Financial Supervision Commission and the Insurance and Pensions Authority
